The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced on the 3rd that the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia will run from December 23, 2027 to January 21, 2028. It cited ‘exceptional circumstances’ stemming from developments in the region.
The Chosun Ilbo reported on the 4th that the 2027 Asian Cup is being postponed by a little over a year. According to Al Jazeera and NBC Sports, the 24-team tournament had been scheduled for January 7 to February 5, 2027 in Saudi Arabia, including Riyadh. The new dates are about 11 months later, and Saudi Arabia remains the host.

In the statement relayed by Al Jazeera, the AFC described the move as being in the interest of all participating teams, officials, spectators and other stakeholders. NBC Sports reported that the AFC pointed to ‘current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region’ along with substantial logistical complexity and travel disruption.
Security Concerns Behind the Decision
Al Jazeera reported that Yemen’s Houthis have repeatedly attacked Saudi Arabia since September, including missiles aimed at Riyadh. The same report said the Saudi-led coalition announced it had intercepted drones and a missile in recent days. Several participating nations reportedly raised security concerns in the weeks before the decision.
Al Jazeera also noted that the tournament draw had earlier been moved to May 9 in April because of the US-Israeli war with Iran. Iran’s response to NBC Sports’ description of the Houthis as Iran-backed does not appear in the reports we reviewed, and whether Saudi Arabia issued its own statement on the postponement is unconfirmed.
Procedure remains ahead. According to Al Jazeera, the AFC will submit the new dates to FIFA for approval. Knock-on effects on qualifying schedules, tickets and broadcasts were not covered in the reports we reviewed, and the impact on South Korea’s national team preparations is also unconfirmed.
