OpenAI CEO Sam Altman visited the Samsung Human Resources Development Center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, on the 31st and met presidents of Samsung affiliates. He is also reported to have had lunch with SK Chairman Chey Tae-won the same day.
According to Seoul Economic Daily and Newsis, Altman met about 50 presidents of Samsung Electronics and major affiliates at the center on the 31st. The theme was 'The next 10 years AI will change: corporate choices,' covering AI's impact on industry and management, new business opportunities and the skills top executives will need. It is his first visit to Korea since October 1 last year.
광고 문의 · 300×250Samsung described the session as part of its companywide AI transformation (AX) push, meant to raise executives' understanding of AI and explore future strategy. Before the talk the executives took hands-on generative AI training, including organizing scattered work data with AI into personal knowledge repositories, Seoul Economic Daily reported.
Cooperation with Samsung and SK
Samsung Electronics signed a letter of intent with OpenAI last October on global AI infrastructure. Samsung SDS is to cooperate on AI data centers and enterprise AI services, while Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries agreed to jointly develop offshore floating data centers. Chairman Lee Jae-yong also visited OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters in July and met Altman.
Newsis reported that SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won had lunch with Altman in Seoul the same day, though this is based on reports and not officially confirmed. SK struck a strategic partnership with OpenAI last year and signed a memory supply letter of intent and a memorandum on a southwest-region AI data center.
Altman had originally planned to visit on June 14-15 but postponed for personal reasons, and OpenAI executives came in his place. Business circles expect the meetings to speed up cooperation between Samsung, SK and OpenAI, but whether any new contract or agreement was announced at this meeting has not been confirmed.
