A 21-meter-diameter, 24-meter-long aerostat finished its first flight tests from October 13 to 16 in Rongxian, Zigong, Sichuan, combining five functions including communications relay and low-altitude surveillance on one platform.
Chinese media including Xinhua and Science and Technology Daily report that the domestically developed all-weather aerostat Yunshao M1000-CNS has completed its first flight tests. The trials were carried out in separate sessions from October 13 to 16, 2026 in Rongxian, Zigong, Sichuan Province.
광고 문의 · 300×250The craft is described as a white floating platform 21 meters in diameter and 24 meters long, developed by Beijing-based tech firm Yufeng Flight. Production plans, price and customers were not mentioned in the reports reviewed.
Five Functions on One Platform
The platform integrates communications relay, navigation augmentation, wide-area surveillance, weather sensing and counter-threat detection. Reported performance figures include communications coverage of roughly 2,000 square kilometers and navigation accuracy at the 20-centimeter level. Several outlets said it can effectively manage unauthorized low-altitude drone flights, known as black flights.
The test sequence ran through final assembly of the rigid-flexible structural system, transfer out of the hangar, buoyancy transfer, tethered mooring and low-altitude hovering. The focus appears to have been operating the craft tethered to the ground while holding at a set altitude.
Significance and Open Questions
Aerostats stay aloft by buoyancy, like balloons and airships, and are often seen as a middle layer between satellites and drones that can loiter for long periods. The test is read as aimed at persistent surveillance and communications reinforcement. Details such as endurance, maximum altitude and bad-weather tolerance were not given in the reports reviewed.
This first flight appears to be a stage for verifying system integration and tethered operation; performance in real mission conditions remains a task ahead. No official announcement of the follow-up test schedule or certification process has been confirmed.
