In a poll released by Gallup Korea on Oct. 9, approval of President Lee Jae-myung's job performance was 37 percent, unchanged, while disapproval fell 5 points to 51 percent. Support for the Democratic Party was 35 percent, the lowest since the government took office.
According to the Kyunghyang Shinmun on Oct. 9, Gallup Korea surveyed 1,000 voters nationwide on Oct. 6-8, and approval of President Lee Jae-myung's job performance was 37 percent, the same as the previous survey. Disapproval fell 5 points to 51 percent, with 12 percent reserving judgment.
광고 문의 · 300×250The poll used telephone interviews with 100 percent random sampling of virtual mobile numbers, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 points at the 95 percent confidence level and a response rate of 9.7 percent. It was the first since Lee's Sept. 18 press conference, and the downward trend that had run before Chuseok stopped, the Kyunghyang said.
Among reasons for approval, diplomacy led at 24 percent, followed by economy and livelihoods 14, doing well overall 7, and policies for ordinary people and welfare 5.
Reasons for disapproval and context
Reasons for disapproval were real-estate policy 18 percent, defense, security and North Korea policy 15, and curbing prosecutors' powers and abolishing the Prosecutors' Office 8. Doing poorly overall and economy and livelihoods were 7 each, while moral issues and avoiding his own trials, and dictatorial or unilateral conduct were 4 each; a full farmland survey newly appeared at 2.
The Kyunghyang cited the DMZ landmine blast and the Oct. 2 launch of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency and the Public Prosecution Office as backdrops to the rise in defense and prosecution-related complaints.
Party support
On party support, the Democratic Party fell 5 points to 35 percent, its lowest since the government took office. The People Power Party was at 26 percent, down 1 point, with the Rebuilding Korea Party at 3, the Reform Party at 2, and the Progressive Party and others at 1 each. Because this is a phone poll with a single-digit response rate, changes should be read together with the margin of error.
