Cristiano Amon, president and chief executive of Qualcomm, laid out a direction for AI smartphones in his keynote at Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui, Hawaii, on the 22nd, local time. At its core was a declaration that the phone experience would move, for the first time in twenty years, from apps to agents.

The smartphone is not going away, Amon said; the agent does not replace the handset but becomes the center of the experience. Next-generation AI phones, he said, would be rebuilt so that an agent grasps a user's intent and completes the task itself.

Technically, the emphasis fell on bringing technology designed for data centers down to the handset. There is no limit to what an AI smartphone can do, he added. Qualcomm also set out plans to extend Snapdragon into an agentic platform spanning phones, personal computers and wearables.

Google said it would tightly integrate Gemini Intelligence, which evolves the existing operating system into an AI intelligence layer, with Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform.

Imagining a Screen With Fewer App Icons

The app-centered structure has been the grammar of phone use for nearly twenty years since 2007: find the function, open the app, work through the steps inside it. An agent-centered model inverts that order, with the user stating a goal and software stitching together the apps and services required.

How far the shift is realized in shipping products remains to be seen. The boundary between on-device and cloud computation, the handling of personal data, and the revenue structures of app developers all have to move together.

It matters for the semiconductor supply chain too. More on-device AI computation raises demand for high-bandwidth and low-power memory alike. That is why memory and foundry firms in South Korea and Taiwan are watching the announcement.
