The Blessing Our Motherland basket, Tiananmen Square's National Day centerpiece, was revealed after its main body was joined in the early hours of the 22nd, when the basin and body were hoisted into place together.

The arrangement sets peonies, roses, sunflowers and grapes among other blooms and fruit to convey blossoms in profusion and an abundant harvest, with sculpted pomegranates, apples and persimmons placed alongside.

The south face carries the words Blessing Our Motherland and the years 1949-2026; the north face reads Happy National Day with the same years. The full basket is scheduled to be completed and unveiled by September 25.

Beyond the square itself, ten three-dimensional themed flower beds are being built along Chang'an Avenue between Jianguomen and Fuxingmen, all due for completion by the end of September.

A Civic Ritual Repeated Each Year

The giant basket has become part of Beijing's seasonal scenery before the National Day holiday. Installation is usually done late at night and before dawn, so residents meet a changed square in the morning. The design and inscriptions shift slightly year to year while the grammar of the composition holds.

This year the National Day break falls close to the Mid-Autumn Festival, so crowds are expected to swell in a period when travel and family visits overlap. The city is likely to publish viewing routes and crowd-management plans separately, as in previous years.

A Date Marked on Overseas Calendars Too

National Day is a mainland public holiday, but it remains a season of events and gatherings in Chinese communities abroad. Chinese schools and associations in Korea have long scheduled sports days, elders' banquets and scholarship events around this time. That is part of why photographs of the square's basket travel so quickly through messaging groups.
