The 23rd China-ASEAN Expo and the China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit opened in Nanning, Guangxi. Timor-Leste, now a full member of ASEAN, appeared as a co-host for the first time, bringing all eleven member states together.
The expo opened on Sept. 17 in Nanning, capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, for a five-day run under the theme of sharing 3.0 opportunities and building better lives together. Timor-Leste, admitted as a full ASEAN member, took part as a co-host for the first time.
광고 문의 · 300×250Timor-Leste's status is the symbolic change this year. Its specialty products are being shown in the commodity exhibition area for the first time, a dedicated investment and trade promotion session is being held, and its chamber of commerce is joining the business summit and the China-ASEAN Business Council annual meeting for the first time.
Since its first edition in 2004 the expo has become a regular venue for trade and investment talks between China and ASEAN. This year's program centers on implementing the upgraded free trade arrangement, covering the digital and green economies and supply chain connectivity.
Why eleven members matter
Timor-Leste, independent since 2002, pursued ASEAN membership for years and completed the process as the eleventh member. It is a small economy of roughly 1.3 million people, but extending ASEAN's geography to the Timor Sea affects the shape of regional cooperation.
China and ASEAN remain each other's largest trading partners, though the composition differs sharply by country. Indonesia and Malaysia lean toward raw materials and components, Vietnam toward electronics assembly, and Thailand toward agricultural goods and auto parts.
Points of contact for Korea and Taiwan
Korean companies watch the expo closely. ASEAN is a major export and production base for Korea, and changes in China-ASEAN trade rules move rules of origin and tariff calculations with them. Taiwanese firms expanding production in Vietnam and Malaysia weigh the same variable.
This paper does not read expo announcements purely as achievement figures. There is always a gap between memoranda signed on the exhibition floor and investment actually carried out, and year-end statistics are where it is verified.
