A subcontracted worker in his 30s at Hyundai Heavy Industries' Gunsan shipyard was killed after being caught in equipment, Kyunghyang Shinmun reported. Work was halted right after the accident, and authorities are investigating the exact circumstances and whether safety rules were followed.

Shipbuilding and heavy-industry sites are known to carry high accident risk, given the frequent handling of large equipment and heavy loads. The structure by which subcontracted workers are concentrated in dangerous processes has been pointed to repeatedly.

Labor groups raised the prime contractor's safety-management responsibility and the outsourcing of dangerous processes, urging measures to prevent recurrence. Around the same time, workers also died in industrial accidents in places such as Changwon.

Industrial safety takes effect only when institutions and on-site practice work together. Safety training, equipment inspection, and real guarantees of the right to stop work are cited as core tasks.
