What the Africa Corps is
Russia's Africa Corps is understood to have inherited the role previously played by the Wagner Group. Mali's government has deepened security cooperation with Moscow since French forces withdrew.

Why Niger appears
Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, after successive military takeovers in recent years, quit the Economic Community of West African States and formed their own security bloc to respond jointly. Reports of Nigerien air support suggest that bloc now functions as an operational unit.
