China chairs the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum this year. A digital week has opened in Chengdu, with more than ten ministerial-level events planned across the year.
China opened APEC Digital Week in Chengdu, Sichuan, on July 16, China Daily reported. It includes digital and AI ministerial meetings, an AI high-level forum, and roundtables on data-driven growth.
광고 문의 · 300×250The foreign ministry said the second half of APEC's 'China year' would be equally substantial, with more than ten specialized ministerial or high-level events as host.
Why Chengdu
Chengdu is an inland hub in western China with concentrated software, gaming and electronics industries. Holding the digital agenda inland rather than in a coastal megacity reads as the host emphasizing balanced development.
APEC comprises 21 member economies and works by consensus and voluntary implementation rather than binding treaty. The chair has considerable latitude in setting the agenda.
What is on the table
Core items are AI governance, data flows, digital trade norms, and digitalization of small and medium firms. Because members regulate cross-border data very differently, any statement is likely to stay at the level of principle.
This year's APEC has also been mentioned as an occasion for restoring Korea-China ties and shuttle summitry; gatherings of leaders customarily double as venues for bilateral talks.
A third perspective
Sinophone Bridge Times does not judge APEC by the length of its communiqués. The substance of such bodies is officials from 21 economies learning one another's regulatory language. At a moment when each defines differently what is permitted when data crosses a border, aligning definitions is itself the result. For Chinese-heritage firms scattered across the Asia-Pacific, that definition is an operating cost.
