A domestically developed super-large-diameter tunnel boring machine of the 14-meter class, named Pioneer, has come off the production line in China. Large boring machines were long an imported item, and the rollout was presented as evidence of progress in domestic manufacture.
The domestically made 14-meter-class super-large-diameter shield machine 'Pioneer' has rolled off the line, Huanqiu reported.
광고 문의 · 300×250A shield machine bores through ground while assembling the tunnel lining behind it, and is core equipment for subway, undersea and water-conveyance tunnels. The larger the diameter, the harder it becomes to design cutterhead loading and to control ground stability during excavation, placing the 14-meter class in a technically demanding band.
German and Japanese firms have long led this global market. China has pushed localization since the late 2000s, starting with small and mid-size machines and widening to large ones; this rollout sits on that line.
Localizing large infrastructure equipment bears directly on procurement cost and construction schedules, since imported machines take time from order to delivery and spare-parts supply depends on outside timetables.
Rather than reading such news as a win or loss in technical competition, Sinophone Bridge Times treats it as a question of how the cost structure of infrastructure building changes. For Chinese firms taking part in infrastructure work across Southeast Asia and elsewhere, diversified sources of equipment are a practical variable.
