More than a month after the local elections, the battle over electoral distrust is only growing. The fight over recounts, a special counsel and a parliamentary investigation has entered a new phase with the special committee's launch.

The Democratic Party pressed on July 16: “Why is the People Power Party delaying both the recount and the special counsel? Is this a declaration of ‘election fraud again’?” — signaling a head-on response to swirling allegations, the Kyunghyang Shinmun reported.

Yoon Sang-hyun of the PPP, who chairs the parliamentary probe committee on the election commission, shot back that “the ruling party should accept both the recount and the special counsel,” demanding the probe address alleged mismanagement, the Chosun Ilbo reported.

The dispute is rooted in the ballot-shortage fiasco and vote-counting controversies of the June election. Hearings and investigations continue, but politics has already moved to the blame-assignment stage.

Election-system experts worry about the normalization of electoral distrust across camps: verify through institutions, they argue, because using distrust as political fuel corrodes democracy's foundations.

How far the recount, special counsel and probe will actually go is unclear. What is clear: voters are increasingly likely to hear the same fight replayed at the next election.
