President Lee Jae-myung has reportedly said he does not want writer Yoo Si-min punished in a probe over alleged false statements about him. Because the offense can be prosecuted only if the victim wishes, police are expected to close the case for lack of prosecutorial grounds.
According to the Kyunghyang Shinmun, a presidential office official said Lee expressed on the 20th that he does not want Yoo punished. The wish is to be conveyed to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, which is handling the case, through channels including the presidential civil affairs office. The charge is one that cannot be punished if the victim does not wish it.

The complaint and the remarks at issue
The case began when a civic group filed a complaint with police on the 28th of last month, accusing Yoo of defamation by false statements under the information and communications network act. The agency’s public crime investigation unit questioned the group’s head as complainant on the 19th.
At issue are remarks Yoo made on a YouTube program on the 22nd of last month. He claimed it was untrue that Lee had floated, as the maximum prosecution reform, splitting investigation and indictment functions into separate bodies under the Justice Ministry. He also said reform had stalled because the president did not want a full separation of investigation and indictment, and that this deceived the public.
Yoo appears to have made a similar claim on another YouTube show in July. Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung rebutted that Lee and the presidential office had never wavered from the core value of separating investigation and indictment, and the office said on the 24th of last month that it was checking the facts.
The Kyunghyang reported analysis that the decision is meant to keep friction within the broader ruling bloc from growing. Democratic Party lawmaker Choi Min-hee posted a message of welcome on Facebook. Yoo’s own reaction had not been confirmed at the time of reporting.
