The Incheon Overseas Chinese Association (craik.co.kr) recently posted a notice, no. 6100 on its open board, titled ‘Guide to free shingles vaccination for foreigners aged 60 and over’. Our collector captured only the title, so eligibility conditions, dates, venue and how to apply are unconfirmed. The association’s site list also shows only the title, so details must be checked in the original notice or by contacting the association (032-772-2129, 032-772-4073).

Shingles occurs when the chickenpox virus from childhood lies dormant in nerves and reactivates when immunity falls. It causes a band of blisters and pain on one side of the body, and the risk of the disease and its complications rises with age. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency is known to recommend vaccination for people aged 60 and over.
The cost of the shingles vaccine in Korea has been considerable. According to an earlier Dailypharm report, out-of-pocket vaccination ran about 150,000 to 200,000 won, cited as a main reason for low uptake, and a bill was once proposed to add it to the national immunization program with free shots at public health centers. The Incheon notice appears from its title to ease that burden, but who funds it and how far it extends is unconfirmed.
It is generally known that vaccine types and the number of doses vary by product, so consulting medical staff before vaccination is advisable. For people with weakened immunity, those taking medication for other conditions, or those who have already had shingles, the timing also needs a doctor’s judgment.
With a sizable share of elderly overseas Chinese in the Incheon area, such notices can be a real help to health care. Eligible residents are advised to ask the association first how to confirm eligibility and what documents are needed. We will follow up if the full text adds anything new.
