US media reported on October 16 that President Donald Trump had moved out press secretary Katie Zacharia, who began work on October 12. The Chosun Ilbo and others described it as the shortest tenure of any White House press secretary.
CNN and The New York Times reported on Friday that Trump had fired Zacharia. Fox News, however, quoted a senior White House official as saying she is ‘transitioning out’ of the role, with no date set. The wording differs between ‘fired’ and ‘transitioning out’, and we could not verify an official White House statement.
광고 문의 · 300×250Trump announced the appointment himself on Truth Social last Sunday, and she started on Columbus Day, October 12. According to Fox News, she is an attorney and television commentator who had most recently been senior communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group, the company behind Truth Social, and earlier served as a deputy assistant secretary for public affairs and spokesperson at the Department of Homeland Security.
A brief debut
Zacharia held her first briefing at 9:30 a.m. on October 13 in the White House briefing room. PBS NewsHour reported that it lasted about 15 minutes, with roughly half taken up by an opening statement on Trump’s achievements and his midterm rallies. Only three reporters were called on, and others shouted questions after she declared the session over.
She said Trump is ‘his own best spokesperson’ and that her job is to amplify his agenda, and she disclosed that Kimberly Guilfoyle, the ambassador to Greece, had been asked to resign. Outlets such as Raw Story reported that the debut was widely scrutinized by both liberal and conservative commentators, and a separate CNN analysis said her reception on Fox News had been chilly.
Why, and how people reacted
No official reason has been given. According to reports, Trump told reporters he had urged her to ‘reconsider’ the job and referred to what he called nasty press coverage of her performance. Asked what he wanted her to do instead, he said he wanted her to be happy. A headline on CNN’s page also raised questions about her credentials, but we could not read the article body, so that point remains unverified.
On the record books, Jerald terHorst, press secretary under President Gerald Ford, resigned in 1974 after about 30 days and has been regarded as the shortest-serving holder of the post. Zacharia’s tenure is far shorter. Whether it is counted as four days or five depends on how each outlet measures it. No successor has been reported.
The episode follows the departure of Karoline Leavitt, the first press secretary of Trump’s second term, who left on August 27 after 19 months. Fox News noted that briefings were rare in the interim and were handled mostly by senior figures such as Vice President JD Vance and Attorney General Todd Blanche. With the midterm elections approaching, it is again unclear who will carry the White House message to the press.
