Major breaches at telecom operators and card companies since last year have heightened public alarm. At the time, the government pledged tougher sanctions for security violations and greater authority for chief information security officers.
Financial hacking is also expected to be a major issue at the parliamentary audit that opened on Oct. 6, with responsibility for protecting customer data and whether regulators carried out proper checks likely to come under scrutiny.
Since ethnic Chinese and other foreign residents in Korea also manage living expenses and remittances through bank and card accounts, experts advise paying close attention to notices from financial institutions and alerts about unusual transactions.
