President Donald Trump said on social media on Sept. 19 that he is creating an artificial intelligence force and will soon name a new so-called AI czar to oversee policy. He offered no details on structure or implementation.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he is building an AI force much as he created the Space Force in his first term, adding that the Space Force had been a great success.

He said he would never hinder or hold back the growth of the industry in any way and would instead cherish, help and protect it. He added that bad actors would be watched and that existing criminal and civil justice systems could readily handle such problems.
The czar post is vacant. The venture investor David Sacks held the role before stepping down in the spring to serve as an outside adviser. If the plan holds, this would be the second AI czar Trump has appointed.
Standing up an AI force as a military organization would require congressional funding and a legal basis. The creation of the Space Force involved substantial debate before the defense authorization act passed. Sorting out overlap with the existing cyber command and the intelligence arms of each service would be the first hurdle.
Governments across Asia are watching. Artificial intelligence is entangled with semiconductor export controls, data center investment and the movement of talent, and touches industrial policy in Korea, Taiwan and Japan directly. Whether institutionalizing the military side reshapes civilian technology rules is the open question.
