A newly built passenger station on the high-speed railway linking Shaanxi's central plain to its southern region has been completed. Once the line through the Qinling Mountains opens, travel time from Xi'an toward Ankang is expected to fall sharply.
The line connects the Guanzhong plain and the Hanzhong basin on a north-south axis. Most of the route consists of tunnels and bridges, making it a test of engineering for high-speed rail through mountainous terrain.

The Qinling range is often described as the climatic divide between northern and southern China. Building rail through it required attention to shifting geology, hydrological conditions and avoidance of protected ecological zones, raising construction difficulty.
Changes to the regional economy are expected after opening. Shipping routes for farm produce and medicinal herbs shorten, and better access to mountain tourism areas may lift demand for short weekend trips.
Network expansion also interacts with patterns of migration. Experience suggests that as more city pairs fall within a two-hour journey, the range of commuting, schooling and weekend travel widens with it.
