A report of fire at a logistics warehouse near the Gyeongin Ara Waterway in Gyeongseo-dong came in at about 2:44 p.m. on Sept. 18. Fire authorities declared a first-tier response at 3:21 p.m. and raised it to the second tier at 6:25 p.m. as the risk of spread grew.

Sixty-nine vehicles and 167 personnel were deployed. Thirty-four people were evacuated and no injuries were confirmed. The main fire was controlled about seven hours after it began.

Investigators believe the fire started in boxes outside the warehouse and spread to the two-story building. Fire officials said stacked goods inside made suppression difficult. The precise cause is under investigation.

Why warehouse fires are hard to fight

Warehouses concentrate combustible material. Packaging, plastics and stacked pallets sit at close intervals, so fire spreads quickly, and heavy smoke makes entry and reaching the seat of the fire difficult. Even when sprinklers operate, water blocked at the top of a stack may not reach the lower layers.

Response tiers set the scope of mobilization: the first draws mainly on the local station, the second brings in equipment from neighboring areas. Raising the tier is a precaution about possible spread rather than a determination of damage.

What neighbors and businesses should check

Smoke can carry into nearby areas, so ventilation and masks when going out are advised for the day of the fire and the following day. Businesses storing goods at the site should check the compensation scope in their storage contracts and whether fire insurance applies.
