Typhoon Shadel has slowed its forward speed while moving north toward China's Zhejiang province. Taiwan's weather service says the island is outside the storm's direct path, but outer circulation combining with southwesterly flow could bring heavy rain to central and southern Taiwan on Aug. 28.

On the night of Aug. 27, northern Taiwan recorded overnight temperatures of 34C as air descended across the mountains — the familiar warming that appears in the north when a typhoon passes to the island's north.

Where and how much

Forecasters expect rainfall to concentrate over the central mountains and the southern plains. Short bursts of intense rain are possible, warranting caution over low-lying flooding and landslides.

At sea, swell lingers even as the storm withdraws. Fishing operations and outlying-island routes may be canceled or delayed, so checking before departure is advised.

Visitors arriving during typhoon season should check airline cancellation policies and hotel refund rules in advance. In Taiwan, work and school suspensions are announced separately by each local government, usually the evening before or in the small hours of the day itself.

Mountain attractions and the eastern coastal highway are often closed for rockfall risk even after rain stops. Building slack into an itinerary is the safer approach.
