On the 76th anniversary of China-Myanmar diplomatic relations, President Xi Jinping held formal talks in Beijing with Myanmar State Administration Council Chairman Min Aung Hlaing. China's Foreign Ministry said both sides agreed to deepen comprehensive strategic cooperation and carry forward the spirit of weathering storms together.
According to Chinese Foreign Ministry documents, Min Aung Hlaing visited China June 15-19 and held talks with Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People on June 16. Premier Li Qiang and NPC Standing Committee Chairman Zhao Leji also held separate meetings, Huanqiu reported.
광고 문의 · 300×250Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1950, the two countries have maintained close ties as neighbors for 76 years. Building on the Pauk Phaw friendship, both sides reaffirmed efforts to build a community of shared future across four pillars: political trust, development cooperation, security coordination, and people-to-people exchange.
Key agenda: infrastructure, economic corridor, security
The talks reportedly focused in part on progress in the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC). The road, rail, pipeline, and port network linking the two countries is strategic infrastructure boosting China's southwestern access to the Indian Ocean, and forms the backbone of bilateral economic cooperation.
Border-area stability also featured on the agenda. Huanqiu reported that both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation on joint border management and improving the livelihoods of local residents.
Historical context of weathering storms together
The Chinese diplomatic phrase means navigating hardship side by side. In China-Myanmar relations it reflects a shared historical understanding that the two countries have maintained consistent cooperation through shifting East Asian geopolitics since the Korean War. They also share the legacy of jointly advocating the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.
Huanqiu assessed the 76-year diplomatic history as a symbol of stable bilateral foundations, citing Xi Jinping's description of Myanmar as China's longest-standing neighbor and trustworthy partner.
Economic cooperation substance
Investment cooperation in agriculture, manufacturing, and energy was also discussed. Myanmar serves both as a resource-supply partner and, to some degree, as a production-diversification location for Chinese enterprises. The two sides reportedly also reached agreement on trade facilitation and customs clearance improvements.
If trade and investment channeled through the economic corridor continue to expand, border-area communities and port cities on the Myanmar side could benefit from economic activation.
Relevance for Sinophone communities
Myanmar has a Sinophone community numbering in the hundreds of thousands, concentrated in inland cities such as Mandalay and Taunggyi. Greater bilateral stability could indirectly affect the business environment for local Chinese-heritage entrepreneurs. Expanded cultural and people-to-people ties would strengthen links in language, education, and culture.
